Measures to combat global warming and save energy and resources

The NISSIN FOODS Group has been converting the boiler fuel used at production plants from heavy oil to natural-gas fuel since 2006 and also takes various measures to reduce CO2 emissions at plants that use heavy oil. We also implement energy-saving measures, such as a sharp reduction in steam usage in the steaming process, through improved energy efficiency in production processes, switching over to LED lighting or lighting equipped with motion sensors, partial removal of lighting, and improved air conditioning efficiency through partitioning. As a result of these initiatives, group-wide CO2 emissions in fiscal 2014 decreased by 11% from the fiscal 2007 level to 1.72 million tons.

Nissin Foods (Thailand) Co.,Ltd. uses only palm shell, a biomass fuel, for the boilers at its new plant located in Navanakorn in northern Bangkok that went into operation in July 2013.

Introduction of New Energy Sources and Energy Consumption Visualization

The NISSIN FOOD PRODUCTS CO., LTD. Shiga Plant has installed a solar power generation system and gas cogeneration system, and is operating as an environment-friendly plant. It is pursuing further energy savings by installing a facilities monitoring and control system and visualizing power consumption, compressor air volume, and gas consumption. In addition, waste heat generated at the time of power generation using the cogeneration system is used to dry sludge, which contributes to sludge reduction.

Installation of Thermal Insulation Covers

The NISSIN CISCO CO., LTD. Tokyo Plant has reduced heat loss and lowered CO2 emissions by 22 tons per year by installing thermal insulation covers on flange valves at 25 locations on steam piping. The plant has installed heat exchangers on its heavy oil boilers and uses the waste heat to preheat feed water, thus increasing heat efficiency. In addition, the plant has secured the green space and environmental facilities areas stipulated in the Factory Location Act by planting grass and using rainwater-permeable asphalt for a portion of the asphalt pavement at the plant parking lot.

To increase transport efficiency, the NISSIN FOODS Group is working to make our products more compact. By decreasing the bulk of product packaging, increasing storage efficiency, and using optimal stacking methods, we are improving loading efficiency.

To reduce environmental impacts, in May 2007 the NISSIN FOODS Group established the Basic Policy on Environmentally Friendly Container and Packaging Design to guide development of container and packaging design. Under this policy, we promote the 3Rs for creation of a recycling-oriented society (reduce, reuse, and recycle) and engage in environmentally friendly product development. By reducing product packaging bulk and eliminating shipping trays formerly needed to protect cup-type products from transportation damage, we are cutting down on the use of containers and packaging.
