Disaster and Hunger Relief Activities

The NISSIN FOODS Group feels a vital commitment to feed people in a disaster and relieve chronic hunger around the world. Our dedication to this cause dates from the earliest days of our founding.

Disaster relief Activities

Since instant noodles have a long shelf life and are simple to prepare, they are essential emergency relief supplies when disaster strikes. The NISSIN FOODS Group vigorously engages in disaster relief activities involving the provision of instant noodles. For instance, we supplied cup-type noodles free of charge and dispatched Kitchen Cars with on-board hot water heaters to disaster-stricken areas at the time of the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995, the Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake of 2007, and the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.

Cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is a U.N. food assistance agency whose mission is the eradication of hunger and poverty. In fiscal 2006 NISSIN FOODS HOLDINGS joined the council of the Japan Association for the World Food Programme, a non-profit organization that serves as a liaison for private-sector cooperation with the WFP in Japan, of which Chief Executive Officer Koki Ando has served as chairman since August 2010. The NISSIN FOODS Group is a special sponsor of the WFP Walk the World and the WFP Essay Contest, events to mobilize people to eliminate child hunger. In addition, shareholders who wish to make a social contribution through the shareholder benefit program can select a donation to the WFP as a program option.

Participation in the Red Cup campaign with Chicken Ramen

Since April 1, 2012, NISSIN FOOD PRODUCTS has participated in the WFP Red Cup campaign, a school meal program that supports the future of children in emerging countries. NISSIN FOOD PRODUCTS donates ¥0.2 to the WFP for each serving of Chicken Ramen and ¥0.34 for each serving of Chicken Ramen Donburi sold. The packages of products included in the campaign carry the Red Cup logo, which symbolizes the containers the WFP uses to provide meals. The donated money is used to fund school meals that provide necessary nutrition to impoverished children.

Support for Victims of Natural Disasters through the World Instant Noodles Association (WINA)

The World Instant Noodles Association (WINA) is an industry organization proposed by instant noodles inventor and our founder Momofuku Ando and launched in 1997 whose purpose is to contribute to development of the industry and the dietary improvement of people around the world by enhancing the quality and ensuring the safety of instant noodles.

In 2008, WINA established the WINA Disaster Relief Fund. This is a system by which WINA member companies rapidly deliver instant noodles to victims when a major disaster occurs. WINA members have delivered hot food to victims of unprecedented severe disasters in areas around the world, such as the Haiti earthquake, the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the flooding in Thailand.
