Health and Nutrition

Policies

At the NISSIN FOODS Group, part of the philosophy of the founder is “Biken Kenshoku” (Eat wisely for beauty and health). It expresses that, besides filling empty stomachs and satisfying people’s sense of taste, another important function of food is to develop beautiful bodies and keep people healthy. Based on this philosophy, we are developing products for health-conscious customers, including products with lower calories, sodium content, and carbohydrates, as well as those added with dietary fiber and nutrients, while flexibly addressing nutritional issues that change with the times, and striving to improve people’s health.
In addition, our Group positions “Health and Nutrition” as one of its material issues, aiming to realize a sustainable society and enhance corporate value.
Based on this policy, we have formulated the NISSIN FOODS Group Policy on Nutrition and are advancing initiatives to solve issues of health and nutrition through our business activities.

Targets

Improving Product Nutrition Using “NISSIN-NPS”

NISSIN FOODS HOLDINGS has developed our own nutritional profiling system, "NISSIN-NPS," which scores the nutritional value of products, and began operation in February 2024. NISSIN-NPS is based on the Health Star Rating System (HSR), one of the NPS widely used around the world, and scores the nutritional value of products according to the content of nutrients that should be avoided in excessive intake (saturated fatty acids, sodium, etc.) and nutrients recommended for intake (protein, dietary fiber, etc.). Furthermore, vitamins and minerals, which are not used in the scoring under HSR, have also been added to the evaluation items, and the scores reflect whether appropriate amounts of vitamins and minerals are included in the products.
To accelerate efforts related to nutrition and health through food, we have set the following goals.

  • By 2030, we will increase the percentage of products with improved nutritional value through NISSIN-NPS to 50% (compared to 2020).
  • By 2030, we will launch 150 nutritious products that meet the criteria of healthy product set by NISSIN-NPS.

Structure

At the NISSIN FOODS Group, under a cross-organizational framework involving management, we advance initiatives and confirm progress on one of our material issues, “Health and Nutrition.”
Our Group’s technology, development, and research center, “the WAVE,” consists of the Global Innovation Research Center and the Global Food Safety Institute. The Global Innovation Research Center generates innovative technologies, while the Global Food Safety Institute pursues food safety and security. In addition, it brings together development functions not only for instant noodles but also for chilled, frozen, rice, confectionery, and lactobacillus beverage products, serving as a foundation for expanding the possibilities of food for the next generation. Equipped with a framework that integrates everything from basic research to applied development, we are engaged not only in the development of innovative products utilizing various technologies and the promotion of nutrition improvement based on scientific evidence, but also in a wide range of themes that contribute to the future. Going forward, we will continue to deepen our initiatives, taking into account trends in international nutrition standards.
The Group—whether in-house or outsourced—does not conduct animal experiments except in cases when required by laws and regulations.

Initiatives

Nutritional Improvement through Products

By utilizing NISSIN-NPS to score the nutritional value of products and quantitatively evaluate them, we are promoting the continuous improvement of a wide range of product categories, including instant noodles, and aiming to enhance the overall nutritional value of our products.

Creation of Health Value through Research and Technological Development

At the NISSIN FOODS Group, in order to solve issues related to “Health and Nutrition,” we are conducting research and technological development while making full use of scientific approaches. Specifically, we are broadly engaged in everything from basic research to applied development, including the study of new sodium-reduction technologies, research and development of new ingredients using plant-based proteins, elucidation of taste mechanisms to scientifically capture deliciousness, and utilization of lactobacillus materials.
As a result, these efforts have led to product development based on scientific evidence, such as products that pursue a perfect balance of nutrition and taste, reduced carbohydrate and salt products, Foods with Function Claims, and products using newly discovered lactobacillus.

Employee Health

For employees, we provide KANZEN MESHI (Perfect Meal) menus at employee cafeterias, which pursue a perfect balance of 33 nutrients and deliciousness.
